Support, Advocacy, and Culturally Safe Care
Just like any family, pregnancy, birth, and postpartum are deeply meaningful experiences—but they can also come with real safety concerns, being heard, and receiving respectful care. Unfortunately, it is too often that women of colour's pain is not taken seriously, our voices are not heard, and we are continuously dismissed. This is one of the main reasons why more families of colour are choosing to hire doulas.
Advocacy and Being Heard
Families of colour often face systemic bias within healthcare settings. Studies continue to show higher rates of birth complications and maternal mortality among Black and Indigenous families.
Having another team member knowledgeable about informed consent is beneficial. We aim to empower families with the right questions and support them in following their intuition. Our role is not to advocate for parents, but to help ensuring their voices, choices, and concerns are valued during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum.
Having someone in the room whose sole role is to support you can make a powerful difference.
Culturally Safe and Aligned Support
Many families of colour seek doulas who understand their cultural traditions, family structures, and lived experiences. Whether it’s honoring ancestral practices, supporting spiritual preferences, or simply feeling understood without having to explain yourself, culturally aligned doula care creates a sense of safety and trust.
This kind of support allows families to show up fully as themselves during one of life’s most vulnerable moments.
Emotional and Mental Health Support
Pregnancy and postpartum can be emotionally intense, especially for families navigating intergenerational trauma, immigration stress, or lack of community support. Doulas provide continuous emotional care—checking in, holding space, and helping families feel less alone.
For many families of colour, this emotional support is just as important as physical care.
Education and Empowerment
Doulas help families understand their options—from birth plans and pain management to feeding choices and postpartum recovery. Education empowers parents to make informed decisions and to feel confident in advocating for themselves in and outside the hospital setting.
When families are informed, fear decreases, and confidence grows.
Building Community and Continuity of Care
Hiring a doula often means gaining access to a wider support network, including lactation consultants, midwives, mental health professionals, and culturally relevant resources. This continuity of care is especially valuable for families who may not feel fully supported by traditional systems.
Final Thoughts
Families of colour hire doulas because they want support, safety, advocacy, and care that honors who they are. Doula care isn’t a luxury—it’s a meaningful investment in a healthier, more empowered birth and postpartum experience.
If you’re expecting and want support that centers you, your culture, and your choices, I’d love to connect.
